How to create Split trips (One load with multiple trips)?
Introduction:
In the TMS (Transportation Management System), there are situations where a single load needs to be divided into multiple trips, each assigned to different drivers. This guide will explain how to create split trips, allocate them to various drivers, and ensure accurate split rates for settlement.
Step 1: Open the Load
Begin by opening the relevant load for which you want to create split trips. Ensure that both the load and the trip associated with it are in the "In Progress" status.
Step 2: Create a New Trip
To create the second trip for the load, click the "Add Trip" button. This action will enable you to split the load between two different drivers.
Step 3: Modify Trip Details
In the newly created trip, you'll need to make the following adjustments:
- Change the Truck
- Update the Driver
- Modify the Trailer fields
- Adjust locations, including pickup and delivery points
- Modify dates and times to reflect the second driver's schedule
Step 4: Indicate Split Trips
In the load view, you will notice a new line that indicates the load has been "Split in Trips." Pay attention to the red alert, which suggests that split rates need to be adjusted.
Step 5: Adjust Split Rates
To ensure accurate split rates, navigate to each trip. In the trip's "Edit Status," change the split rates accordingly. This step ensures that the load's cost is distributed correctly between the two drivers.

Step 6: Validate the Load
After adjusting the split rates in both trips, return to the load view. Here, you can confirm that the split rate has been correctly updated.
Step 7: Settlement for Drivers
When creating settlements for the drivers, the system will utilize the adjusted split rates to allocate payments accordingly. This step is crucial for accurately compensating each driver for their share of the load.
Step 8: Trip Delivery
After the deliveries are completed, upload the Proof of Delivery (POD) for both trips. Ensure that both trips are set to the "Delivered" status to reflect the successful completion of the load.
Conclusion:
Efficiently creating split trips within TMS is essential for managing complex loads involving multiple drivers. Following these steps allows you to accurately divide the load and ensure that each driver is compensated correctly. The ability to handle split trips enhances your load management capabilities and contributes to efficient transportation operations. If you encounter any issues or have questions, please reach out to your TMS administrator for further guidance. Accurate split rates and proper load management are key elements in TMS operations.
